Filmmaker and child advocate Trenton Payne founded Spirit Boy Publishing because he has first hand knowledge of what it’s like to introduce your children to the idea of divorce and stepparenting. His experiences became the impetus for creating books that broach such topics. The tricky part? Still making it entertaining! And don’t hit readers over the head with a lecture! Rule number one is get kids excited about books.
We’re giving away his two books, which we think your youngins will really like. His first book was entitled The Pancake Tree. It’s a picture book about monsters, princesses, dark forests and pancakes. It’s also about stepparents being positive role models in children’s lives. It did so well that he wanted to write another book that dealt with the natural progression of blended families. In Heroes, Villains, and Vincent, the main character is asked to choose sides: become a super villain like his dad and stepmom, or become a superhero like his mother and stepdad. In the end, the boy finds his own path with a much more seemingly mild occupation: gardening. (There’s also a section about the family Octo-Chicken sending him to meet a long lost Uncle in Australia, but you get the picture.)
